Remember when people would return from work with bloodied hands and only a few cents to show for it? People asked for technology to help save them from that inevitable fate and now, some resent technology for taking away jobs. Having technology elevates the menial laborers to be forced to become something more, to improve instead of obey. This is what will drive our civilization into the future where robots become more than just machines; they become part of who we are. Many are apprehensive toward this new future, saying that machines will control us - the only way that a machine can control us, is if we tell it to control us. We should embrace our future with machines, because technology is only beginning to scratch the surface of ways that it can improve our lives.

Love it! I have often felt the same way with outsourcing. I don't really see why people are so opposed to it. By sending jobs to China, we are giving them jobs, we are giving more Chinese people to opportunity to provide for their family. Do some people loose their jobs here? Yes, but now they will do what it takes to improve themselves and the job force in our country will be more advanced.
ReplyDeleteSorry, ricksmt! I accidentally deleted your comment! (I'm very new to blogging). So in the interest of full disclosure, here's his comment:
ReplyDelete"I would argue that an increase in technology is not synonymous with improvement. While the application of technology enables some, it disables others. Also, increased technology is bringing us ever closer to automatic self-sufficiency--all necessities met. When you think about that, it frees us to do all sorts of things--good and bad."
I agree that some technology may hurt others, but that is only in the case that it makes others more successful, which in turn will hurt those who are less successful.
ReplyDeleteHaving necessities met is what made civilization as we know it. Without someone having an idea of planting a seed so that we don't need to hurt for every bit of food, they wouldn't have had time to ponder the arts.
The only reason that having necessities met is bad, is because people make it bad. It's not the technology; it's the users.
